Questions
Do I need a special permit to drive in Zanzibar?
Yes. Visitors need a Zanzibar temporary driving permit in addition to their home licence. An international driving permit alone is not accepted. We arrange the permit before you arrive; send us a photo of your passport and licence on WhatsApp. The fee is $25, one-off, arranged before you arrive.
Is insurance included?
Yes. Every car is fully insured. If the car is damaged, the maximum you pay is the excess of $300. Tyres, windscreen, off-road driving and driving under the influence are not covered.
Is there a deposit?
No. There is no deposit. The rental is paid at pick-up: US dollars or Tanzanian shillings in cash, M-Pesa / Tigo Pesa, or card by arrangement.
Can I pay in shillings?
Yes. All prices are shown in US dollars and Tanzanian shillings. You can pay in either currency, in cash or by M-Pesa / Tigo Pesa.
Where do you deliver?
Delivery is free to Abeid Amani Karume Airport, Stone Town, the ferry terminal and Chukwani. Delivery to hotels on the north and east coast (Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe, Paje, Jambiani and nearby) costs $20 each way.
What is the minimum age?
Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have held a full licence for at least one year. An additional driver costs $5 per day.
What is the fuel policy?
Full-to-full: the car is delivered with a full tank and should be returned full. Fuel stations are located along the main roads; most accept cash only.
Can I rent a car with a driver?
Yes. A driver can be added to any car for $25 per day.
Can I take the car on the ferry to Dar es Salaam or Pemba?
No. Our cars stay on Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar. Every part of the island is within about an hour and a half of Stone Town.
What happens if the car breaks down?
